Database Connectivity

HCL Solutions has been working in partnership with Graphnet Health Solutions to deliver a smart application providing mobile NHS workers with secure, remote access to the centralised patient records database for the Hampshire PCT.

The GLite system has given NHS staff access to more than 600,000 patient records. All data is securely transmitted using 512bit 3DES encyption algorithms, approved for use by the government with restricted data , and an audit trail captures and records every time a record is accessed to ensure that the data is not abused.

With BlackBerry there is a direct TCP-IP level connection to the wireless network as well as Triple-DES encryption protected data travelling between the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and the BlackBerry device.

Community staff, including district nurses and health visitors, out-of-hours doctors and consultants have been provided with the ability to view data records, with their patients' permission, anywhere in the UK that there is GPRS coverage (97% coverage).

HCL Solutions is very careful when handling critical data. The BlackBerry solution keeps the data safely behind the NHS N3 firewall - even when being accessed in the field. The handhelds are password protected, as is the GLite application. If the handset is ever misplaced it can be disabled over the air by issuing a kill command from the centralised server.
